William Serfaty Shield Essay Competition 2022

Rotary Club of Gibraltar and the Gibraltar Heritage Trust would like to invite entries for our annual essay competition launched in 2019 to commemorate the late, lifetime Rotarian and Gibraltar Heritage Trust member, William Serfaty. 

The award is presented in the form of a shield and a £500 cash prize which will be presented at the annual Rotary Awards in March/April each year.

Opened to all Year 9 students in Westside & Bayside Comprehensive, Prior Park School and the Hebrew High School.

The prompt for this year's theme is:

‘A short story about you living through a time in history.’

Criteria for judging:

  • Adherence to theme
  • Historical accuracy – the story must be fact based, although application of imagination is encouraged.
  • Organisation – the writing must flow logically with clear structure. 
  • Creativity and originality with valuable content and/or research incorporated into the essay
  • New or fresh perspectives on versions of Gibraltar’s heritage/historical story
  • Impact – does the piece leave the reader with an understanding of an aspect of Gibraltar’s history? 
  • Maximum of 1,000 words. 

Deadline for entries is end of February.
