Heritage Festival Week Tours
The Gibraltar Heritage Trust has put together a series of historical tours to form part of Heritage Week. The programme for the week, which has been organised in collaboration with The Ministry for Tourism and Gibraltar Cultural Services, aims to provide opportunities for engagement with our heritage. These tours are open to all and will explore a variety of sites and periods of Gibraltar’s history. Tickets are available to purchase on www.buytickets.gi (concessions available for GHT members).
Programme of tours below:
Friday 9th May – ‘Line Wall Circuit’ – with licensed guides
Times: 10:30am and 12:30am
Join us for a walking tour along Line Wall Road, exploring Gibraltar’s defence walls, bastions and counterguards, Irish Town, John Mackintosh Square and civic buildings on the route.
Friday 9th May – ‘A Rocky Labyrinth’ Explore the Northern End of our Old Town – with Manolo Galliano
Time: 5:00pm
Based on his popular book A Rocky Labyrinth: The History of our Streets, Lanes, Roads and Ramps in the City of Gibraltar, join guide and author Manolo Galliano for a walk through the northern end of Gibraltar’s Old Town. Through passageways, cuestasitas and patios, this tour is sure to offer a delightful insight into the history, heritage, character and people of the Old Town.
Saturday 10th May – ‘A Rocky Labyrinth’ Explore the Southern End of our Old Town – with Manolo Galliano
Time: 10:00am
Based on his popular book A Rocky Labyrinth: The History of our Streets, Lanes, Roads and Ramps in the City of Gibraltar, join guide and author Manolo Galliano for a walk through the southern end of Gibraltar’s Old Town. Enter the Southern part of Gibraltar’s Old Town and discover places that you may not know existed.
Saturday 10th May – ‘Guns Galore!’ Visit Victoria Battery – with Francis Silva
Times: 10:00am and 12:00pm
Learn about the development of the 100 Ton Guns and Victorian Artillery in this visit to Victoria Battery, an artillery magazine below the Gibraltar Fire Station at Grand Parade. There will be two tours for this visit, one at 10am and another at 12pm.
Saturday 10th May – ‘Where they lay at peace’ The history of Witham’s Cemetery and those buried within
Times: 12:00pm and 2:00pm
Discover more about this hidden 18th/19th Century Cemetery and the stories of some of the notable individuals within it. Join Dr Keith Farrell as he takes you on a journey into the 1800s. Tea & Coffee will also be served in our cottage.
Saturday 10th May – ‘Soldier On!’ Explore the history of the South District & Rosia Bay – with Richard Garcia
Time: 10:30am
Discover key elements of Gibraltar’s military establishment in the south district with local author and guide, Richard Garcia. The tour will end at Rosia Bay, where HMS Victory docked after the Battle of Trafalgar with Nelson’s body onboard.
Sunday 11th May – ‘Traces of History’ Explore Nun’s Well & Europa Point – with Claire Montado
Time: 10:30am
An ancient reservoir, pirate raid, and traces of the Second World War, this tour is sure to thrill you! Join Claire Montado, CEO of the Gibraltar Heritage Trust, for our last tour of Heritage week, where multiple periods of Gibraltar’s history collide and are preserved.
