Restoration of Water Plaques In Gibraltar
Long time Gibraltar Heritage Trust member and volunteer, Andrew Rowbottom, has begun restoring Gibraltar’s historic water plaques, many of which have deteriorated through age and exposure. These plaques form an important part of Gibraltar’s civic and social history. Recognising their cultural value, Andrew’s careful restoration work is helping preserve these markers to ensure they remain visible and appreciated by future generations.
His restoration work involves cleaning and repainting. This initiative not only safeguards a tangible piece of Gibraltar’s past but also enhances public awareness of the everyday infrastructure that shaped community life in earlier generations.
The Gibraltar Heritage Trust has praised Andrew’s commitment, noting that projects like this highlight the vital role volunteers play in preserving Gibraltar’s heritage. By bringing these plaques back to life, Andrew is helping ensure they remain visible, understood and appreciated by the community.
This restoration effort forms part of the Trust’s wider mission to protect and promote Gibraltar’s historical assets and encouraging community engagement.
