The University of Royal Naval Units (URNU) Visit to Gibraltar and Volunteering at Princess Anne's Battery with Fortress of Gibraltar Group

The University Royal Naval Unit (URNU) recently travelled to Gibraltar to take part in a hands on heritage conservation project at Princess Anne’s Battery, working in close collaboration with the Fortress of Gibraltar Group (FoGGs). The visit formed part of an ongoing initiative to stabilise, preserve and enhance one of Gibraltar’s most significant 18th century defensive positions.

During their time on the Rock, the URNU cadets undertook a range of essential restoration and maintenance tasks, including vegetation clearance, painting, structural cleaning and general site upkeep. Their work contributes directly to the long term conservation of the battery, helping ensure the site remains accessible, safe and appreciated by future generations.

Beyond the practical work, the project offered the volunteers a unique opportunity to learn about Gibraltar’s extensive military heritage. Guided by members of the FoGGs, the cadets explored the history, engineering and strategic importance of Princess Anne’s Battery, gaining first-hand insight into the challenges of preserving historic fortifications in a modern environment.

The Fortress of Gibraltar Group expressed their appreciation for the cadets’ commitment and enthusiasm. “The URNU volunteers were outstanding and are the best group we have had to date,” said FoGGs representatives, who praised the team’s professionalism and willingness to take on demanding tasks. “Their contribution has made a meaningful impact on the ongoing care of Princess Anne’s Battery.”

The Gibraltar Heritage Trust extends its thanks to the FoGGs for their continued dedication to safeguarding the Rock’s fortress heritage, with special recognition to Ian Reyes, Fabian Reyes and Richard Durrell, who regularly give their time and expertise to improve the condition of Gibraltar’s historic defences.

This collaborative project highlights the value of volunteer engagement in heritage conservation and reinforces the shared commitment to protecting Gibraltar’s unique history.
